Are you smart enough to beat the trivia expert known as the Beast?
The Chase is an American TV quiz show that was derived from a British program with the same name. This version premiered on the Game Show Network in 2013 and is now on ABC. It's hosted by Sara Haines and stars Mark Labbett as the “chaser” or the “Beast” as he’s referred to on the show.
The US edition of The Chase follows the same overall format as its UK counterpart, with the exception that the US version uses three contestants rather than four. The Chase takes the form of a quiz show competition where contestants try to earn money by going head-to-head against an expert trivia player known as the chaser.
During the game, each contestant participates in a singular “chase,” also known as the Cash Builder. This round allows them to answer as many questions as they can in one minute to earn money that will go toward the team’s prize bank.
Once the Cash Builder round is over, the contestant joins in a chase or head-to-head battle with the chaser. Both sides then answer a series of questions as the contestant tries to move the prize money down the game board and into the team bank without getting caught.
The game closes out with one Final Chase. During this portion of the game, the team chooses two question sets randomly for themselves, with the other set being set aside and used for the chaser. They have two minutes to provide as many correct answers as possible but must ring in and be called upon before answering. Each correct answer given moves the team one place higher on the game board, but it’s important that the team does not try to confer with each other about the answers.
After contestants have finished their Final Chase, the chaser is allowed two minutes to catch the team through answering questions from the third unused set. If the chaser misses or passes a question, the clock is stopped momentarily, and the team is allowed to discuss and answer. If the team answers correctly, the chaser gets pushed one step back. If the Chaser doesn’t catch the team before the timer runs out, the participating contestants earn equal shares of the team bank. If the chaser beats them, they leave with nothing.
Are you ready to take on the Beast? If you think you have what it takes to answer questions more accurately and faster than a trivia know-it-all, ABC is accepting applications for men and women over the age of 18.
